Alright, so I finished watching ATLA for the first time a couple days ago... And may I say I highly recommend it... if you're a kid. I'll admit, this show is an extremely good show... for kids. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like watching this renowned show for the first time as an adult just didn't give me the same vibes I would get if I were still a kid.
I'd say it's my fault for not watching it earlier when I was actually a child, but hey, sometimes life just doesn't work that way. Pretty sure I was in Japan when this aired anyway... And since I wasn't fluent enough to understand Japanese TV, this show wouldn't have been as enjoyable anyway.
Regardless, I still enjoyed watching it. However, as an adult, I just found so many issues with the characters and plot that I couldn't fully immerse myself in the world, nor enjoy it to its fullest extent. Also, I truly hated Katara to the depths of my core. I just found her to be such an annoying character (sorry for the Katara lovers out there).
The seasons definitely get better as the show goes on (I almost couldn't stand to get through Season 1), and the character development (Zuko, especially) is better than most shows these days. But really? Some things were just so unnecessary or so convenient.
~ SPOILER ALERT ~
Did Aang and Katara really have to end up together in the last episode? I felt like that was so unnecessary. I personally would've enjoyed it more if they had left it as an obvious potential future happening, but not necessarily that they had to be together from that moment onwards. Aang is literally some 12-year-old kid, he doesn't need a girlfriend! Obviously the airbender line had to continue, so he'd had to eventually get married and get kids with someone, but they didn't have to be like, "YES, AANG ENDS UP WITH KATARA, THE END." Could've just implied it and moved on. Also, how could they not make a spin-off of Zuko finding his mom? I would've watched that over this series, most likely. How is Firelord Ozai so buff when all he does it sit in his own fire the entire show? How convenient was that "taking away the firebending" solution they came up with at the last second? I get that it's a kids show, but damn, just kill the dude. Ozai (and Azula) had zero redeeming qualities about them. Technically, isn't life imprisonment a worse fate, especially in that dark ass cell with low-quality food? For a war, it's kind of amazing how no one died. Yes, yes, kids show, but still. I'm sure people actually died from the explosions and whatnot, but no one important in the series died, except Jet. And even that was just an implication.
~ END OF SPOILER ~
Throughout the series, I had a lot of rant sessions (most of them about hating Katara, ngl) to my friends that had already seen the series... and overall, I'm glad I watched the show, if only to understand the memes that are all the rage online these days. Oh, also because of Appa and Momo. Those two are the best. But to be completely honest... I don't think I'd be missing out on much not having watched the series, lol.
